Is there a way to search through all the text files in a folder (and subfolders) for a specific string or bit of text in Mac OS X?

A few more useful commands; Using a basic text editor; What is the command line? On a Mac, if I open Finder, this is my home folder. In the same place. The same is true of the command line interface. I’m going to open Terminal.app by opening Spotlight search (command + spacebar) and type in Terminal. On a Mac you use the Command key where on a PC you would use Control (or Ctrl). If you were wondering why Ctrl-B didn't make your text bold, chances are you were previously a PC user and didn't. Recursive search and replace in text files on Mac and Linux. Ask Question. The mac version of the sed command requires an ' after the -i. Tested on OSX, that does recursive search-and-replace for text in files within a given directory, and confirms each replacement. It's new, so might be buggy. Step 8: Highlight with Command A Highlight everything in a document using the Command and the 'A' key. You can do the same to highlight characters in a text field as well. Because Mac OS X is a meld of Unix and the older Mac OS, in some cases text files have carriage returns and in others they have line feeds. For the most part, classic applications still require text files to have carriage returns, while the command-line Unix utilities require line feeds.

You can't do this from the spotlight icon in the menu bar. But you can do it with spotlight:
- Navigate to the folder in the finder.
- Type your search in the search bar on the top right of the folder.
- There is a line above the results that says:
Search: This Mac 'Your Folder Name'
Click on the name of your folder to restrict the search to the folder instead of the whole computer, which is what the default selection 'This Mac' does.
Then click the gear icon, choose show search criteria, and change the kind to text files.

If you prefer the command line,
You'll need to be (or get) familiar with
slhckgrep
. Read man grep

Microsoft word for mac add line around text box in word. For simple documents, you probably don’t need text boxes. Why Use Text Boxes in Microsoft Word?
BBEdit supports great search, too, in files and folders.

Open Finder
Navigate to the folder you want to search if you have one.
Enter the term you want to search in the search bar in the upper right hand corner. You may need to stretch out the window to see it.
After you start typing or press enter you'll see a section below the search box to the left that says,
Search: This Mac 'Your Folder' Shared
If you want to search your whole computer click on 'This Mac'. Otherwise click on the folder name next to it. It may already be selected.

To the right side of those options is a 'Save' button with a plus sign next to it.
Click the plus sign. You'll see two drop down lists. In the first one select 'Kind'. In the second choose 'Any' or 'Text .
Choosing 'Any' may find more matches, while 'Text' will find files Mac OS X determines fall under the category 'Text'.
The number of search results will appear at the footer if the footer is shown.
FYI I've noticed that sometimes it takes time to do a search and sometimes there is no indication Finder is doing anything. I wouldn't wait too long but if you're searching a small folder it should be very quick. If searching your Mac it may take up to a minute or more.
Nota bene: To find an exact phrase enclose it in quotes.

I'd suggest you look at File Content Finder on the App Store (disclaimer - I'm its developer). It's an affordable app specifically designed for searching file contents without indexing. It supports text files and other major file formats (pdf, doc(x), xls(x), etc).
Word for mac - how to put a border around a text box. If you're referring to Border Art, this is available only for page borders. There are a few 'fancy' borders (double and triple lines, thick and thin lines, zigzag lines, etc.) that can be added to table cells, and pretty much the same options are available (as 'lines') for text boxes, but you can't use Border Art (this has been true in every version since Border Art was added to Word). Why not choose to laugh.
Its filtering lets you optimise and refine your search by multiple criteria - file type, creation/modification dates, etc.
Here is a detailed documentation on how it works.

When you turn on Dictation, you can do more than use your voice to enter text on your Mac. Create curved text. You can also use dictation commands to tell your Mac what to do, like ”undo that” or ”select the previous sentence.”
Turn on Dictation Commands
Most dictation commands turn on automatically when you turn on Enhanced Dictation:
- Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Dictation.
- Turn on Dictation, then select “Use Enhanced Dictation.”
You can now get a list of commands and select the ones that you want to use:
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Accessibility.
- Select Dictation from the accessibility categories on the left. Then click the Dictation Commands button.
- A list of dictation commands opens. Use the checkboxes to turn commands on or off. Click a command to see which phrases work with that command. For example, “Undo that” works with several phrases, including “Undo this' and “Scratch that.”
Select “Enable advanced commands” to get additional commands.
Use dictation commands
To use any of the commands that you turned on, first make your Mac listen for dictation commands:
- Press the keyboard shortcut for starting dictation. The default shortcut is Fn Fn (press the Fn key twice).
- Or turn on the option “Enable the dictation keyword phrase,” which is next to the Dictation Commands button. You can then speak the dictation keyword phrase to let your Mac know that the next thing you say after the keyword phrase will be a dictation command.
Then speak any of the phrases that work with a dictation command. You can even say “Show commands” to open a window showing all of the dictation commands available to you.
Create your own commands
After you select “Enable advanced commands,” an Add button appears beneath the list of commands.
